What to Look for in a Gas Grill
Embarking on the quest for a new grill is a sizzling adventure, firing up your imagination with all the ‘grate’ culinary masterpieces you’ll soon be cooking up. But let’s be frank, diving into the grill-buying world can be a bit ‘overwhelming’ – it’s a real hotbed of choices! With a smorgasbord of gas grills out there, it’s tough to pick the one that’ll really ‘steak’ its claim as your perfect match. How do you sift through this ‘grilliant’ array to find the one that won’t just be a flash in the pan?
Price
Set a budget for your gas grill and consider the features and quality you can get within that price range. Let me tell you, gas grills can range in price from one to two hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, so it’s important to find a balance between your budget and the features you need and want. You will also want to consider what adding to your budget will enable you to buy.
Sizing Up Your Grill: Perfect Fits for Any Patio
Consider the size of your outdoor space and the number of people you typically cook for. If you have a small space or cook for small groups or a small family, a compact grill with a smaller cooking area may be sufficient and will save you money in the long run. However, if you frequently entertain or have a large family, you may opt for a larger grill with a spacious cooking area. Either way, consider the space you have to work with and what you need. Larger is not always better!
Construction and Durability: Make Sure it’s Built to Last!
You need a gas grill that doesn’t just look pretty or has a great name brand associated with it, but one that is built with high-quality materials and has a sturdy construction. Stainless steel grills are generally more durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. Also, check if the grill comes with a warranty, as this can give you peace of mind regarding its longevity.
Heat Flux vs. BTUs
Even heat distribution for that perfect sear is the “name of the game.” Heat flux is a more accurate measure of a grill’s cooking power than BTUs (British Thermal Units) alone. Heat flux takes into account the size of the cooking area and the amount of heat generated by the burners. It is calculated by dividing the BTUs by the square inches of the cooking area. Look for a grill with a higher heat flux for better cooking performance.
Fuel Flexibility: Propane vs. Natural Gas Grills
When it comes to choosing your grill’s fuel source, it’s time to tap into that age-old wisdom from dear old dad– because let’s face it, dad knows a thing or two about gas, and grilling is his kingdom!
Are you a propane patriot or a natural gas navigator?
- Propane tanks are like nomads, portable and ready to move when you are, perfect for those who like to grill on the go.
- But if you’re more of a stay-at-home grill sergeant with a dedicated spot for your culinary conquests, natural gas might be your alley – just hook it up to a gas line, and you’re ready to roll. Remember, grills can be picky eaters: not all are compatible with both propane and natural gas. So, do a bit of grill-sleuthing and check those specs before you commit. And yes, some brands are like the cool dads of grilling, offering the same model for both types of gas – because flexibility is key when you’re the master of the flame!
Brand Reputation
Consider the reputation of the brand when choosing a gas grill. Look for well-known and trusted brands that have a history of producing high-quality grills. Weber, Napoleon, and Char-Broil are some of the most popular brands in the gas grill market., but there’s also something to be said about those other more “indie” options, such as: Grilla Grills, Fuego Grills, Blaze Grills, and Yoder Smokers.
Additional Features
Many gas grills come with additional features that can enhance your outdoor cooking experience. Some common features include side burners, rotisserie attachments, smoker boxes, and infrared burners. Consider which features are important to you, and choose a grill that offers them.

Sure, the grill market is as varied as a BBQ menu, with prices ranging from a ‘steal-of-a-deal’ hundred bucks to a ‘grill-ionaire’s’ thirty thousand dollars. But let’s be real – you don’t need to spend a fortune to get your grill game on point.
In the realm of under $2,000, you’ll find some flaming hot deals that offer both quality and value. The Best Two-Burner Gas Grills
If you want to cook for the masses, it’s never a bad idea to go with more power. But some of us simply want to enjoy some delicious grilled burgers or dive into a few savory BBQ drummies with a small group on a sunny afternoon. This isn’t the kind of operation that requires umpteen burners running at unfathomable BTUs.
Purchasing a grill that only provides the needed power will save you money. Plenty of two-burner gas grills can handle the simple jobs you need a grill to complete, but just because you want a more modest grill doesn’t mean you want to sacrifice quality.
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys grilling but doesn’t need to make a show of it, the best high-quality two-burner grills available may be just what you need.
Weber Spirit E-210
The Weber Spirit E-210 is the perfect combination of power and humility. Its medium-sized design, coupled with foldable side tables, makes it a great option for smaller patios and decks. And the 26,500 BTUs fueling the Spirit’s two quality burners have enough power to cook a 20lb turkey.
The porcelain-enameled cast-iron grates on this model provide excellent heat retention during your cook, so you don’t have to worry about experiencing cold spots with bigger jobs. They also make clean-up easy once the grilling is done.
The front cabinet can hold your propane tank, and the built-in thermometer helps you monitor your cooking while you mingle. This two-burner grill has everything you need with minimal frills.

Questions & Answers
Here are a few answers to some of the most pressing questions from individuals interested in purchasing a gas grill:
How do I maintain my propane tanks?
Regularly check your propane tank for signs of wear and rust. If you see rust on the bottom of your tank or the valve is stuck or difficult to open, exchange it for a new tank.
It’s also a good idea to keep your tank out of direct sunlight, which can cause rust.
Is gas cheaper than charcoal?
A gas grill will generally cost more upfront than a charcoal grill, but the gas itself is much cheaper than charcoal.
A 20-pound propane tank will usually get you about 25 uses. A 20-pound bag of charcoal gets you around four uses. On average, you spend about $0.60 to use your gas grill and around $3.50 for each use of your charcoal grill. This means if you grill once a week, your annual fuel cost for a gas grill would be roughly $31, and the annual cost for charcoal in that scenario would be $182.
The initial purchase will be more expensive, but you’ll pay far less per grill using gas.
Can I use a griddle on my grill?
Absolutely! A quality griddle is an incredibly useful accessory for your gas grill.
Some grills come with a griddle attachment, so if that’s a dealbreaker, simply find a grill with a griddle. However, while most grill models don’t come with a griddle, they usually have them available for purchase separately.
Can gas grill lines freeze during colder months?
Temperatures would have to be incredibly low for gas grill lines to freeze like -295 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, other factors can contribute to a gas line freezing in cold temperatures, such as the tank not being upright or being overfilled. It’s important to monitor your equipment even during the winter months.
That said, it’s unlikely your gas grill lines are going to freeze. It’s more likely that your regulator will freeze, but even that would require very low temperatures.
How will the wind affect my gas grill?
Wind can force hot air back into your grill through the back end, potentially causing a grease fire. Wind can also blow out your burners which can cause a gas build-up.
If you’re grilling on a particularly windy day, turn your grill perpendicular to the direction of the wind and take special care to monitor your burners. If the wind blows them out, open up the lid and let air circulate in the area for a few minutes before attempting to reignite them.
